How Do I…

Quick answers to common questions from new and returning officials.

Every official must register (or renew) with USA Hockey each season before working any USA Hockey-sanctioned game.

  1. Go to Usahockey.com and start a new registration or renewal for the current season.
  2. Choose the Official registration type and select your officiating level.
  3. If you are 18 or older, complete the required SafeSport training and the Background Screen.
  4. Pay the registration fee.
  5. Save your USA Hockey confirmation number — you will need it for assignments and for OHSAA/league records.

To work Ohio high school games you must register as an OHSAA official each year.

  1. Register or renew through the OHSAA myOHSAA / DragonFly system at officials.myohsaa.org.
  2. Pay the annual officiating fee.
  3. Complete the required rules meeting / exam for ice hockey.
  4. Complete your concussion certification as required by OHSAA.

Keep your OHSAA official number handy for assignors and pay records.

Assignments come through your assignors and the assigning platforms they use.

  1. In the Cleveland area, the two platforms used are ArbiterSports and Dragonfly MAX. Make sure your account is set up on the one(s) your leagues use.
  2. Set your availability and blocks so assignors can see when you can work.
  3. An assignor must add you before you will receive games — reach out to the appropriate assignor for the leagues you want (see the Assignors list on the Contact page).
  4. Accept assignments promptly when they are offered.

Most leagues pay officials through ArbiterPay or by league check.

  1. Set up your ArbiterPay account and link your bank information.
  2. Complete any required tax paperwork (for example a W-9).
  3. Confirm your pay rate for each league.
  4. Make sure your game reports are submitted — many leagues release pay only after reports are in.

Some games are direct pay, some games are cash — see your local assignor for details.

To view and accept your assignments:

  1. Go to arbitersports.com and click Sign In.
  2. Enter your email and password.
  3. Forgot your password? Use the reset link on the sign-in page.
  4. Once signed in, your assignments appear on your dashboard.

Important: an assignor must add you to their group before any games will appear in ArbiterSports. If you do not see any groups or assignments, contact the appropriate assignor (see the Assignors list on the Contact page) and ask them to add you.
